Exam results messages

Congratulations on passing your exams: messages for results day and after

Praise the effort before the result: say well done for finishing, mention how hard they worked, and let them share their score if they want to. NSW HSC results are released on Wednesday 16 December 2026, so a message after the last exam and another on results day both work.

Card ideas for exam results

A handwritten card means a lot at the end of Year 12 or a degree, because it is one of the few things from this time they keep. Text is fine for the "you're done" message after the last exam; save the card for results day or graduation.

Family and close friends sign their own cards. For a bigger celebration, such as a family dinner after results or a graduation lunch, pass one card around the table so the whole family can write in it.

If the family is also pooling toward something bigger, such as a laptop for uni or a first car, keep the card and the collection together: write the collection link on the invitation or in the family group chat, and present the card on the day. Our graduation wishing well guide covers the wording for the collection, and a free graduation registry holds the collection itself. More milestones are in our congratulations messages, and our first job messages are ready for when they start work.

  • After the last exam: a text or a quick card that says "you're done"
  • Results day: a card or message that is about them, not the number
  • Graduation or celebration: one card everyone signs, next to a family collection
  • Results that disappoint: a short private note, no score mentioned

Year 12 results days in 2026

Results days are set by each state and change every year, so check the official source before you plan a card or a celebration. In NSW, HSC written exams finish no later than Thursday 5 November 2026, and HSC results are released on Wednesday 16 December 2026.

For every other state, the release date and time come from the state curriculum authority and the tertiary admissions centre named below. We list only dates we could confirm on an official page, and this table was checked in October 2026.

What to write, and what to skip

  • Lead with the effort. "You worked so hard for this" is true whatever the score says.
  • Let them share the number. Asking "what did you get?" in a card or a text puts them on the spot.
  • Be specific: the late-night study sessions, the subject they found hardest, the way they kept going.
  • Look forward. A line about what comes next keeps the focus on them.
  • Skip comparisons with siblings or friends.

Messages for finishing exams and results day

For the day the last exam finishes.

  • Pens down! School is done. So proud of you.
  • That's the last exam finished. Sleep in, eat something good, and switch off.
  • However it went, you got through it. Time to celebrate.
  • No more study timetables on the fridge. Well done for seeing it out.
  • Year 12 is officially behind you. Enjoy every bit of the break.
  • The hard part is over. Whatever the results say, we know how much you gave it.

Results day

Before or on the morning results come out.

  • Thinking of you this morning. Whatever the screen says, we're proud.
  • Sending you a big hug for results day. Call when you're ready.
  • One number won't tell anyone who you are. We already know.
  • Good luck today. Breakfast is ready whenever you are.
  • Today is just the next step. You've got this, whatever it brings.
  • Big day. Remember how far you've come since Year 7.
  • We'll be here with cake either way.
  • Hoping today brings you good news and a well-earned rest.

Messages for great results

Well done on your results

When the news is good.

  • Congratulations on passing your exams! All that work paid off.
  • You smashed it. Every hour of study shows.
  • Look at those results! You should be so proud of yourself.
  • Absolutely thrilled for you. This is a huge achievement.
  • What a result. The late nights were worth it.
  • Brilliant work. Uni is going to love having you.
  • Top effort and a top result. Well done.
  • Exams passed, and passed well. Time to celebrate properly.

From parents and grandparents

For the family card.

  • We are so proud of the work you put in this year, and of the person you've become doing it.
  • Watching you study every night this year, we knew you'd get there. Well done, darling.
  • Your grandmother has already told the whole bowls club. Sorry, and congratulations.
  • From your first day of kindy to your last exam, it has been a joy watching you grow.
  • You did this yourself, and we are beaming.
  • However you choose to celebrate, you've earned it. Love you to bits.
  • This family has never been prouder. Well done, mate.
  • Nothing makes us happier than seeing you this happy.

From a teacher or tutor

Short and encouraging.

  • It has been a pleasure teaching you. Well done on finishing so strongly.
  • I saw how much work went into this year. Your results reflect it.
  • Keep that curiosity going wherever you head next.
  • Proud to have been part of your Year 12. All the best for next year.
  • Your hard work in that subject paid off. Well done.
  • Best of luck with whatever comes next. You're ready.
  • Thanks for making our class a better place to be. Go well.
  • You asked the best questions all year. Keep asking them.

Uni, graduation and professional exams

Uni exams and graduation

For a degree or a hard semester.

  • Final semester, done! Bring on graduation day.
  • That unit nearly broke you, and you passed it anyway. Well done for sticking with it.
  • Degree finished, and you did it while working too. Seriously impressive.
  • Every assignment, every all-nighter, and here you are.
  • Graduation suits you. Here's to the next chapter.
  • All those library hours finally paid off.
  • You've earned the cap, the gown and a very long sleep.
  • Graduate! The whole family is coming to the ceremony, so wave.

Professional and licensing exams

For a trade or professional qualifying exam.

  • Passing that exam opens a lot of doors. Well done for putting in the study on top of work.
  • Fully qualified! That deserves a proper celebration.
  • Studying after a full day at work takes discipline. You should be very proud.
  • New letters after your name. Well earned.
  • Licence secured. Drinks are on us.
  • So many weekends went into this. Well done.
  • Big one done. Enjoy having your evenings back.
  • Every practice paper was worth it. Congratulations on passing.

Funny

For a student who will laugh.

  • Exams over. You can finally tidy your desk. Or not.
  • Your highlighters can retire now.
  • Officially smarter than me. I'll need it in writing.
  • Sleep in for a week. Doctor's orders.
  • Now you can stop pretending to like flashcards.
  • Celebrate by not opening a textbook for a week. Or a month.
  • You passed! Nobody say the word study for at least a month.
  • You passed! Your brain has earned a long holiday.

When results disappoint

Not every results day goes to plan, and the card or message you send matters more on a hard day than a good one. Keep it private and short, and do not mention the score or the course they missed out on unless they bring it up.

Lead with the person: they finished and worked hard, and you are proud of them for that. Offer something practical, such as a lift to see the school careers adviser, help reading through their options, or a day out where nobody talks about results. Avoid "everything happens for a reason" and comparisons with anyone else.

Messages for a tough results day

Kind and honest.

  • I know today wasn't what you hoped. I'm proud of you anyway, and that won't change.
  • A number on a screen doesn't measure how hard you worked. We saw it.
  • It's okay to be disappointed. Take today, and we'll talk about next steps when you're ready.
  • You finished Year 12, and that took grit. Everything else can be worked out.
  • Plenty of people find their path a different way. We're with you for whichever one you choose.
  • Sorry it didn't go the way you wanted. Fancy a drive and a burger, no results talk?
  • Your worth isn't on that results sheet. Love you, always.
  • Whenever you want to talk options, I'm here. Whenever you don't, I'm also here.

Pool a gift for the end of school or uni

Finishing Year 12 or a degree is when family and friends often want to give something bigger together, such as travel or money toward a first car. One collection lets the whole family add to the same gift.

  1. Create a free registry for the occasion.
  2. Add a wishing well.
  3. Share one link with everyone who wants to chip in.
  4. Buy the gift once you know the total.

Setting up a registry with a wishing well is free. Guests can chip in by bank transfer, in cash or in store with no EasyRegistry fee. Card and PayPal contributions are a Premium feature ($39 one time), and card funds are released when the registry closes.
