Engagement gift ideas the couple will enjoy
Good engagement gifts help the couple celebrate now and save the big household presents for the wedding: something for the toast, a small thing for their home or a date for two. It does not need a big budget: a set of six champagne glasses was about $12 at Target in October 2026.
Do you bring a gift to an engagement party?
If you are invited to an engagement party, bring a card and a small gift unless the invitation says no gifts. One Australian guest etiquette guide suggests Champagne, a plant or a massage voucher as easy choices.
If the couple has not set up a gift list, you are choosing on your own. If they have set one up, or added a wishing well for the wedding, buy from that instead. Our engagement wishing well guide explains how guests contribute.
Not sure what to spend? How much to give at an engagement party answers that question on its own page, and gift ideas by occasion covers other celebrations.
How to choose an engagement gift
- Something for the celebration: glasses, a bottle for the toast or a frame for the proposal photo.
- Something for the home they are building together, kept small and easy to use.
- Time together: a dinner, a class or a tasting gives them a break from wedding planning.
- Something to plan with: a wedding planner journal is useful if they are the organised type.
- Keep it portable. Whether the party is at a pub or someone's home, the couple has to carry everything out at the end of the night.
- Save large household gifts for the wedding, when they may have a list.
Engagement gift ideas by budget
Prices were checked on Australian retailer sites in October 2026 and change often. Use the examples to judge the band, not as a fixed price.
Under $50
- Champagne flutes: A set of glasses for the toast at home.
- Coloured coupe glasses: A fun alternative to flutes for cocktails.
- Frame for the proposal photo: Print the photo yourself and put it in a good silver frame.
- A tall plant: Faux if they travel, real if they are green-thumbed. A local nursery is the place for a real one.
- Taper candles: For a dinner party at their place. A set of three was about $14.99 at Adairs, Oct 2026.
- Wedding planner journal: A place for budgets, guest lists and ideas. Good for the couple who love a list.
- "Our firsts" wine labels: Pair a few bottles with labels for their first dinner party, first anniversary and first home. Easy to make yourself.
$50 to $100
- Champagne: A bottle of French Champagne for their own celebration at home.
- Wine and cheese tasting for two: A relaxed afternoon off from planning.
- Premium coupe glasses: Two good glasses rather than six cheap ones.
- Pasta-making class: Something they can keep cooking together. Check whether the class is priced per person, since the couple needs two places.
- Scented candle: A good soy candle for the home they share.
- Date night jar: Fill a jar with written date ideas and a few vouchers or tickets to start them off. Set your own budget.
$100 to $250
- Picnic basket for four: A willow basket with a cooler and plates, for long lunches in the park.
- Dinner for two: A night out with no wedding talk allowed.
- Designer Champagne flutes: A pair to use at the wedding and keep afterwards. A Maison Balzac set of two was about $139 at David Jones, Oct 2026.
- Engagement hamper: Bubbles, nibbles and chocolates in one box, delivered to their door. Hamper prices vary widely, so compare a few.
$250 or more (best as a group gift)
- Couples massage: A shared massage and facial for two. A 60-minute package for two was about $350 at Red Balloon, Oct 2026.
- Overnight city getaway: A night in a hotel with breakfast, away from the planning spreadsheets.
- A head start on the wedding fund: If the couple has a wishing well for the wedding, the friendship group can put in one contribution together and give one card.
For a couple who already live together
If the couple has shared a home for years, skip anything for the kitchen cupboards. Choose things that get used up, such as Champagne or a tasting, time together, such as a dinner or a night away, or keepsakes from the proposal. Anything bigger can wait until the wedding (see wedding gift ideas), when you can look at their engagement registry or wedding list.
Gifts from parents are often more personal: a family piece of jewellery, a letter about the day they first met their child's partner, or help with a wedding cost the couple names. Talk to the couple before buying anything large.
Make it a group gift from the friendship group
A group of friends can pool towards one night away or a massage for two instead of everyone bringing a bottle, and present it at the party with one card signed by the whole group.
- Create a free registry for the occasion.
- Add a wishing well.
- Share one link with everyone who wants to chip in.
- Buy the gift once you know the total.
Setting up a registry with a wishing well is free. Guests can chip in by bank transfer, in cash or in store with no EasyRegistry fee. Card and PayPal contributions are a Premium feature ($39 one time), and card funds are released when the registry closes.

Engagement gift FAQ
Yes, if that is what the couple has asked for. If they have set up a wishing well for the wedding or the engagement, a card with a contribution is the simplest gift. Without a request, a small present or an experience usually feels more personal at an engagement.
It depends on how close you are and whether you will also be at the wedding. Our separate guide to how much to give at an engagement party covers this, so it is not repeated here.
Yes. Some couples set up a registry or wishing well at the engagement stage, especially if they are saving for the wedding or a home. If there is one, buy from it or contribute to it rather than guessing.
Small gifts are fine to bring on the night. Post larger items or anything fragile to the couple's home so they are not carrying it out of a venue at the end of the night.
Yes. One person collects the contributions, buys the gift once the total is known and gives it with one card. Each person chips in a small, optional amount, and any amount is welcome.
