New job gift ideas for a fresh start

The best gifts for someone starting a new job make the first weeks easier or help them celebrate: a cup for the commute, something for the new desk, or a dinner or experience once the first month is done. Most of the small ideas here sit under $50.

Who gives a new job gift

New job gifts tend to come from two directions. Friends, family and partners celebrate the news, often with something small and personal. The team they are leaving says goodbye, often with a card and a gift from everyone, which is really a farewell gift; farewell gift ideas and how to organise a work farewell cover that side.

A gift is never required. A card or a message with a specific memory often means more than the present. For wording, see congratulations on your new job, and for an internal move up, congratulations on your promotion.

Match the gift to the new job

  • New commute: a reusable cup, a good water bottle or a book for the train.
  • Hybrid or working from home: a candle or diffuser for the home office, a desk plant, or a coffee machine as a group gift.
  • On their feet all day (nursing, retail, trades, hospitality): hand cream, a massage voucher, or a meal out on their first day off.
  • Stepping up to lead a team: a quality notebook and pen, or a work bag that looks the part.
  • Changing careers: something linked to the new field, or an experience to mark the leap.
  • Returning to work after parental leave: something just for them, a coffee cup for the first drop-off and commute, or a meal delivery for the first week back. Say it is a big week; it is.
  • First job after study: a work bag, a desk calendar and a celebratory dinner. A cash gift towards work clothes also helps.

New job gift ideas by budget

Prices were checked on Australian retailer sites in October 2026 and change often. Use them to judge the band.

Under $50

  • Reusable coffee cup: For the new commute and the new office kitchen. KeepCup cups were about $28 to $44, Oct 2026.
  • Notebook and pen: For the first-week notes nobody can remember later. An A5 journal and pen set was about $8 at Target, Oct 2026.
  • Desk calendar: A small calendar for next year on the new desk.
  • Desk plant: A hardy plant from a local nursery in a smart pot.
  • Hand cream for the desk drawer: A small luxury for the workday.
  • Diffuser for the home office: For the days they work from home. A 200ml diffuser was about $49.99 at Adairs, Oct 2026.
  • Photo book from the old job: A book of team photos and messages, for someone leaving colleagues they liked. Officeworks hardcover photo books were from about $39.95, Oct 2026.

$50 to $150

  • Flowers delivered: To their home on the night before the first day, or to the new workplace once they have settled in. LVLY has a congratulations range.
  • Scented candle: A good candle to wind down after big first weeks.
  • A class after the first month: Something fun to look forward to once the onboarding is over. A two-hour pasta and wine class in Sydney was about $99 at Red Balloon, Oct 2026.
  • Wine tasting for two: A celebration they can share with a partner or friend.
  • Experience voucher they choose: Lets them pick something to celebrate once they know their new routine.
  • Restaurant gift card: For a celebratory dinner, ideally somewhere near the new office or their home.

$150 or more (best as a group gift)

  • Massage and facial: A proper reset after a tough handover.
  • High tea for two: A treat to mark the change.
  • Class for two: Something hands-on to share, such as spirit blending with dinner.
  • Carry-on suitcase: For a role with interstate or overseas travel.
  • Coffee machine for the home office: For hybrid workers who now make their own. A Nespresso Lattissima One was about $499 at David Jones, Oct 2026.
  • A quality work bag: A leather or canvas bag for the laptop and lunch. Worth pooling for, since a good one lasts years.
  • A pooled voucher from the old team: One voucher from everyone, chosen for their hobby, beats a desk full of separate small gifts.

What to write with the gift

Keep the card short. SEEK's advice is that "a few sentences is more than enough", and that a line like "you're so lucky to get this role" can read as an insult, because it suggests luck rather than merit. Add a specific memory or say what they will be good at.

For ready-to-use lines by relationship, see congratulations on your new job. More gift ideas for other occasions are in the gift ideas by occasion hub.

A group gift from the team they are leaving

When a whole team is sending someone off to a new role, pooling into one voucher, bag or experience gives them something they will use, and a card everyone signs on the side says the rest.

  1. Create a free registry for the occasion.
  2. Add a wishing well.
  3. Share one link with everyone who wants to chip in.
  4. Buy the gift once you know the total.

Setting up a registry with a wishing well is free. Guests can chip in by bank transfer, in cash or in store with no EasyRegistry fee. Card and PayPal contributions are a Premium feature ($39 one time), and card funds are released when the registry closes.
