Retirement cards

Retirement card messages and what to write

In a retirement card, congratulate them, thank them for one specific thing and wish them well for what comes next. Two or three sentences is plenty. Not every retirement is planned: in ABS 2024-25 data, 13% of retirees left their last job because of their own sickness, injury or disability.

Retirement card ideas

In many Australian workplaces the farewell card is a large paper card that travels from desk to desk before it is handed over at the send-off. A few ways to make yours stand out:

  • Photo card: print a photo from their early days on the front and let everyone write around it.
  • Memory card: ask each person to write one moment they remember rather than a plain "good luck".
  • Advice card: everyone adds one tip for retirement, serious or silly.
  • Grandkids' card: for a family send-off, let the children draw on the inside.
  • Card plus collection: put a note inside saying what the team chipped in for, so the gift makes sense when they open it.
  • Second card for remote staff: post one to another office or site so people who will not be at the party can sign too.

What to write in a retirement card

  1. Congratulate them. Open with the news: congratulations on your retirement, or on a great career.
  2. Name one specific thing. A project, a habit, a kindness. Something only they did is better than "you will be missed".
  3. Add a memory if you have one. One line is enough. Keep it to a story they would be happy to hear read aloud.
  4. Look ahead. Mention what they plan to do, if you know: the trip, the garden, the grandkids.
  5. Sign off warmly. Use your name, and your team or role if they might not place you.

Add a group gift to the card

A retirement card says what the team thinks of them; a shared gift lets everyone back it up. Collect online next to the card so people at other sites or working from home can chip in as well.

  1. Create a free registry for the occasion.
  2. Add a wishing well.
  3. Share one link with everyone who wants to chip in.
  4. Buy the gift once you know the total.

Setting up a registry with a wishing well is free. Guests can chip in by bank transfer, in cash or in store with no EasyRegistry fee. Card and PayPal contributions are a Premium feature ($39 one time), and card funds are released when the registry closes.
