35th wedding anniversary gifts
Coral is the traditional 35th wedding anniversary gift, and jade is the modern alternative on several lists. Because coral belongs on the reef, this guide turns the theme into Great Barrier Reef trips, coral-coloured pieces and Australian jade from Cowell, with AUD prices from named operators and makers.
What this anniversary symbolises
Thirty-five years is the coral anniversary. Coral grows slowly, a fraction at a time, until a reef stands where there was open water, and that is a fair picture of a marriage at this stage: built from small daily additions that nobody noticed while they were happening. The colour carries the year too, a warm pinkish orange that reads as affection rather than fire, a softer note than the ruby still five years away.
Jade sits beside coral on the 35th, given as the modern or the US alternative depending on which list you read. It is a tough green stone, and choosing it at thirty-five years says the marriage has settled into something that will not chip easily. Australian Jade sells nephrite it sources from Cowell in South Australia, as bracelets, bangles and pendants by Australian Jade, so the modern gift can be local as well as lasting.
Coral is the one anniversary material you should never give in its raw form. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority requires a permit to collect any coral, alive or dead, so the 35th material stays in the water and the gift becomes a way of seeing it. For her, a Cowell jade bracelet or pendant. For him, a day on an outer reef pontoon. For the couple, a glass-bottom boat. For parents, adult children can pool money towards a reef holiday.
Traditional gift: Coral
Give coral as an experience or a colour, never as the thing itself. A day on the Great Barrier Reef lets the two of you see living coral up close, and a glass-bottom boat or a semi-submersible means neither of you has to swim to do it. At home, coral-toned flowers, linen or glassware carry the shade without taking anything from the sea. Skip coral jewellery and coral ornaments entirely, including pieces sold as old stock.
Modern gift: Jade
Jade is the modern choice, and South Australia has a local source. Australian Jade sells nephrite from Cowell in South Australia, with a 10mm bracelet at about A$130 and pendants from about A$242 to A$468. A green stone in a simple setting suits someone who would rather wear the year than travel for it, and it pairs well with a reef day if the budget runs to both.

Some lists: coral or jade
In Australia: The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority says a permit is needed to collect any coral, alive or dead, which is why this guide never suggests coral products and points to reef trips and jade instead.
Gift ideas by budget
Under $50 (AUD)
Coral-toned flowers
A bunch in coral pinks and peach, delivered on the morning of the anniversary, puts the colour of the year on the table without touching the reef.
Coral-coloured knit or shirt
A polo, a knit or a pair of socks in coral is a light-hearted way to wear the 35th, and it suits someone who would never wear a gemstone.
Thirty-five year photo book
Adult children can gather the family photos into an Officeworks personalised hard cover book from about $17.95, and close it with a page of pictures from a reef holiday.
$50 to $250 (AUD)
Cowell jade bracelet
A 10mm nephrite bracelet from Australian Jade costs about A$130, an everyday way to wear the modern side of the year.
Lady Elliot Island glass-bottom boat
If you are already staying at Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort, its glass-bottom boat tour is about $29 an adult, about $58 for two, with island access charged separately.
Green Island glass-bottom boat day
Green Island's own glass-bottom boat tour is about $122 an adult, so about $244 for two. It is a gentle reef day for anyone who would rather stay dry.
Cowell jade pendant
Australian Jade lists Origin Collection pendants from about A$242, the headline piece for a jade-led 35th.
$300 and up (AUD)
Fitzroy Island day with lunch
Experience Oz packages a Fitzroy Island day with a glass-bottom boat and lunch from about $166 an adult, about $332 for two, a day that mixes the beach with a look at the coral below.
Quicksilver Outer Reef day
Quicksilver's nine-hour Outer Reef trip is $338 an adult, about $676 for two, or $364 to $383 an adult with coach transfers from Port Douglas or Cairns, at rates listed as valid from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. It includes an underwater observatory and a semi-submersible, so non-swimmers see the coral too.
Moore Reef pontoon cruise
Experience Oz lists a Moore Reef pontoon day with a glass-bottom boat, snorkelling and lunch from about $307 an adult, a good fit for the partner who wants to be in the water.
Pooled reef holiday from the family
Adult children and grandchildren can each put something towards flights and a reef day for their parents, collected through an anniversary registry so it arrives as one trip.

What to write in the card
- Thirty-five years, and you are still the person I want next to me on the boat. Happy coral anniversary, my love.
- To a couple who built something as slow and lovely as a reef: happy 35th, and here is to the next layer.
- Coral takes decades to grow, and so did we. Thank you for thirty-five years of patience and second helpings.
- To our favourite pair: thirty-five years looks good on you. We have chipped in for a day on the reef, so pack a hat.
- Happy jade anniversary. May the years ahead be as steady as this stone and twice as much fun.
More wording by recipient and milestone is in our anniversary messages and wishes.
What to avoid
- Coral jewellery, coral ornaments or a piece of reef brought home: collecting coral in the Marine Park needs a GBRMPA permit, and souvenir collecting has degraded reefs at Hayman, Heron and Green Islands.
- A snorkel-only trip for a partner who does not swim; a glass-bottom boat, an observatory or a semi-submersible shows the same coral from a dry seat.
- Green stone of unknown origin sold simply as "jade"; buy from a seller who names the stone and where it came from.
- Booking the longest outer reef day for someone who tires easily; a half-day island trip can be the kinder choice.
Ways to celebrate
- Book the reef day in secret and hand over the tickets at a coral-coloured breakfast.
- Set a family dinner table in coral and sea green, the two colours of the 35th.
- Hold a vow renewal by the water; in Australia a renewal has no legal effect, so a celebrant can shape it around the two of you.
- Ask each guest to bring one photo from the past thirty-five years and build a wall of them for the party.
- Snorkel or glass-bottom boat together, then frame the best underwater photo as the keepsake instead of a shell.
35th anniversary questions
Coral. Shiels lists coral for the 35th, and When Freddie Met Lilly gives coral or jade. Collecting coral in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park needs a permit, so give coral as a reef trip or as a colour rather than as an object.
Jade. Eternity Rose marks jade as the US entry and Bridebook UK lists it as the modern gift, while other lists give "coral or jade" depending on the source.
Australia has a local option: nephrite jade from Cowell in South Australia, sold by Australian Jade from about A$130 for a bracelet.
The coral anniversary, and on some lists the jade anniversary. The two Australian gemstone lists we checked, Shiels and Eternity Rose, do not agree on a 35th gemstone, and the Australian florist guide we checked names no flower for it.
Not without a permit. GBRMPA says a permit is needed to collect any coral, alive or dead, and "take" includes removing, gathering or interfering with it. Research from James Cook University notes coral collecting has been restricted since 1933.
Take a photo instead. It makes a better 35th keepsake and leaves the reef as you found it.
Pick one with a glass-bottom boat or a semi-submersible. Green Island tours include a 30-minute glass-bottom boat, and Quicksilver's Outer Reef day includes an underwater observatory as well as a semi-submersible.
