After the birth

Gifts for a newborn baby, and for the new parents

The most welcome gift after a birth is help for the new parents: a meal, a short visit or a job done without being asked. Add something small for the baby, or a treat the parents can use later, such as an experience voucher with a long expiry.

Before you visit

A baby shower gift is chosen before the birth, often from a list. The visit afterwards is different: the parents are tired and the house is busy, so the best gift is anything that makes the next few days easier.

  • Text first and let the parents choose the day and time. Say you are happy to wait.
  • Keep it short. Half an hour is plenty unless they ask you to stay.
  • Stay away if you are unwell, and come back another week.
  • Bring food that needs no work: something to eat now, and something for the freezer.
  • Offer a specific job rather than "let me know if you need anything". "Can I take the washing?" is easier to say yes to.
  • Hold the baby only if you are offered. The parents are the ones who need looking after.

Help that counts as a gift

Practical help often means more than anything wrapped. It also costs little, which makes it a good gift from a friend on a budget or from a group that wants to give again later.

  • A home-cooked meal in a container they do not need to return.
  • A grocery drop at the door, with a text so nobody has to answer the bell.
  • A load of washing, folded and brought back.
  • The school or kindy run for an older child for a week.
  • Walking the dog, mowing the lawn or putting the bins out.
  • A roster of friends who each bring one dinner in the first few weeks.

Your time (free or close to it)

  • Dinner on the doorstep: Drop a meal at the door and leave. Include reheating steps on the lid.
  • Freezer stock-up: Two or three labelled meals for the weeks when the visitors stop coming.
  • One-handed snacks: A basket of things that can be eaten with one hand during a feed, such as muesli bars and fruit.
  • An hour off: Mind the baby in the next room while the parent showers or naps.
  • Sibling outing: Take an older brother or sister to the park so they get some attention of their own.
  • A job from their list: Ask what is bugging them, such as the lawn or the dishes, and just do it.

Under $50

  • Baby photo album: For the first prints, before every photo ends up only on a phone. One was about $12 at Target, Oct 2026.
  • A board book: A book for the baby, or for the older sibling to "read" to them.
  • Hand cream for the parent: Constant washing and night feeds are hard on hands.
  • A cup with a lid: For the cuppa that gets put down and forgotten.
  • Clothes a size up: The smallest sizes are outgrown fast. A bodysuit in 00 or 0 will still fit in a few months, when the early gifts are too small.
  • A small gift for the older sibling: A book or a small toy, so the new big brother or sister has something to unwrap too.
  • Hooded towel: A practical gift for bath time.

$50 to $150

  • Meal delivery voucher: A few nights of dinners from a local meal service. Check it delivers to their suburb.
  • Cleaning voucher: A one-off clean in the first weeks is a gift nobody returns.
  • Massage or day spa for the parent: For when the baby has settled and the parent can book a few hours away.
  • Experience voucher for later: New parents cannot book much in the first months, so a long expiry matters. Red Balloon vouchers start from $25 and are valid for five years (Oct 2026).

$150 or more (best as a group gift)

  • A month of dinners: Friends or a team at work pool money for meal deliveries across the first month.
  • A cleaner for the first weeks: A few visits from a cleaner, paid for by a group, so the parents can rest.
  • Keepsake blanket: A soft blanket the child may keep for years. A Jellycat Mimi Strawberry Blankie was about $179.99 at David Jones, Oct 2026.
  • Towards a big item they still need: If the parents have set up a wishing well, a group can put in together towards the thing they are still saving for.

Gifts for the new parents

Babies get a lot of presents in the first weeks. The parents get very little, and they are the ones up at 3am. A gift aimed at them is rarely a double.

  • Food, in any form: cooked, frozen, delivered or a cafe gift card near their house.
  • Rest: an hour of babysitting, a massage voucher for later, or a cleaner.
  • Comfort: good hand cream, a lidded cup, a soft robe.
  • Recognition: a card that says how well they are doing.
