Educators' Day gift ideas for childcare and kindy educators

Early Childhood Educators' Day is held on the first Wednesday of September, so the 2026 day has passed and the next one is Wednesday 1 September 2027. The best gifts are a card or drawing from your child plus something the whole room can share, like a morning tea. Ask your centre about its gift rules first.

When is Early Childhood Educators' Day?

Early Childhood Educators' Day falls on the first Wednesday of September each year. In 2026 it was Wednesday 2 September, so that date has passed; the next one is Wednesday 1 September 2027.

It is a different day from World Teachers' Day, which Australia marks in late October (Friday 30 October in 2026). You can thank your childcare or kindy room on Educators' Day, when your child leaves for school, or both.

You do not need to wait for either date. A thank you after a hard settling-in month, or after a milestone the educators helped with, lands just as well.

Thanking a whole room of educators

A childcare room is rarely one person. Educators work early and late shifts, there may be a room leader, a cook and a centre director, and the person who greets your child at 7am may never meet you at pickup. A gift the whole room can share reaches everyone without anyone being left out.

  • Share it: a morning tea, a box of good tea and coffee for the staff room, or a plant for the room thanks everyone at once.
  • Name names in the card: list every educator your child talks about, including the ones on the early shift.
  • Make it from your child: a drawing, a handprint or a few words your child dictates means more than anything bought.
  • Go together: if several families want to give, one shared gift from the room's families is easier for the centre than a pile of small ones.

Educators' Day gift ideas by budget

Prices are examples seen on Australian retailer sites in October 2026 and change often.

Free or nearly free (from your child)

  • A drawing called "What I love about my educator": Ask your child what they love most and write their answer under the picture, word for word.
  • Handprint card: A handprint or footprint with your child's name and the year. It makes a keepsake for the room's wall.
  • A short video message: If your centre shares updates through an app, a 20-second clip of your child saying thank you is easy to send to the room.
  • A big card every family signs: One large physical card in the foyer for every family to sign. It works well when the room's families organise it together.
  • Home baking for the staff room: A tin of biscuits or a slice for morning tea. Ask whether the centre is nut-free, and label what is in it.
  • A note to the centre director: A few lines about what an educator did for your child, sent to the director, is a thank you that gets passed on.
  • Printed photo: A print of your child with their educators, in a simple frame, from your own photos.

Under $50 (from one family)

  • A board book for the room: A classic for story time, signed by your child. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy was about $8 at Target, Oct 2026.
  • Reusable coffee cup: A travel mug with a lid, for the educator on the 7am shift.
  • Hand cream: Constant hand washing is hard on skin. L'Occitane Almond Sublime Hand Cream 75ml was about $39 at David Jones, Oct 2026.
  • Notebook and pen: Useful for an educator who writes daily observations.
  • A plant for the room: A hardy pot plant from your local nursery for a windowsill the children can help water.
  • Cafe gift card: A store gift card for the cafe near the centre. Choose a store card, not a prepaid Visa or Mastercard.

$50 to $150 (pooled from the room's families)

  • Morning tea or lunch for the whole team: Arrange it with the director so it arrives on a quiet day and covers both shifts.
  • A coffee voucher for every educator: One small cafe card each, in one envelope with a card from the room. Everyone gets the same, including the cook.
  • Experience vouchers: These suit people on shift rosters because they can book when it suits. Red Balloon vouchers start from $25 and are valid for five years (Oct 2026).
  • Books for the room library: A stack of new picture books, each signed by a child from the room.
  • Something for the play yard: Ask the room leader what the room needs, such as sandpit toys or seeds for a veggie patch, then buy it with the collection.
  • Staff room hamper: Good tea, coffee, biscuits and a thank-you card from the room's families.

Over $150 (for a whole centre)

  • A catered lunch for the centre: For a centre-wide thank you, a catered lunch for every room, organised with the director so it covers both shifts.
  • Something the whole centre keeps: Outdoor play equipment or a set of books for every room, chosen with the director. Check the centre's gift rules before you buy something of this value.

Ask your centre about gift rules

Early learning centres set their own rules on gifts, and they vary from centre to centre. Before you collect, ask the centre director whether there is a limit, whether gifts should go to the whole room, and whether anything is off limits.

  • Give a gift, not cash. If the families have pooled money, the organiser buys the gift or a store gift card and hands that over.
  • Keep it fair. A shared gift for the room avoids one educator receiving a lot and another nothing.
  • Check allergies before bringing food, and label what is in it.

What to write in an educator thank you card

Keep it short and specific. Mention one thing the educators did for your child, and let your child add a drawing or a word. For more wording, see teacher thank you card ideas and the thank you card ideas guide.

From the parents

  • The cuddles, the songs, the endless patience: thank you. Drop-off is easy because of you.
  • You turned a teary first week into a child who runs in the door. We will never forget that.
  • Caring for our little one like your own made going back to work so much easier. Thank you.
  • We hear about you every night at dinner. Thank you for a wonderful year in the Possums room.
  • To everyone in the room, early shift and late: thank you for keeping our child safe, happy and busy.

For a milestone

  • Toilet training took patience, and you had plenty. We could not have done it without you.
  • First words, first friends, first painting on the fridge. Thank you for being part of every one.
  • Settling in took a while, and you never rushed it. Thank you for making the room feel like home.
  • Those daily updates and photos made the long workdays feel shorter. Thank you.

Leaving for school

  • Because of you, our child is ready for big school, and so much more besides.
  • Excited for big school, sad to leave you. Thank you for the best start.
  • Since they could barely walk, you have been there. Thank you for every year in between.
  • Missing the waves at the gate already. Thank you for everything you have done for our family.

In your child's words

Write down exactly what they say.

  • Best voices at story time. Thank you for reading to me.
  • Sandpit with you is my favourite. Thank you.
  • I will miss you at big school. You are my best teacher.

Make it a gift from the room's families

When several families want to thank the same room, one collection buys something everyone can share, like a team lunch or a coffee voucher for every educator, instead of a pile of separate gifts.

Share the link in the room's parent group, or print a QR code from our QR code generator for the foyer noticeboard.

  1. Create a free registry for the occasion.
  2. Add a wishing well.
  3. Share one link with everyone who wants to chip in.
  4. Buy the gift once you know the total.

Setting up a registry with a wishing well is free. Guests can chip in by bank transfer, in cash or in store with no EasyRegistry fee. Card and PayPal contributions are a Premium feature ($39 one time), and card funds are released when the registry closes.
