Teachers' Day gift ideas and end-of-year class gifts

In Australia, World Teachers' Day is held in late October (Friday 30 October in 2026), and the last week of Term 4 is the other big gift moment. The best gifts are a heartfelt note plus something small, or one class gift. Public school teachers work under department gift rules, so check your state below.

When to give a teacher a gift

There are two natural moments in the Australian school year. World Teachers' Day is held in late October in Australia (Friday 30 October in 2026), later than the international date of 5 October. AITSL, which runs the day in Australia, offers a free celebration kit with notes of thanks; see the AITSL World Teachers' Day page.

The bigger gift moment is the end of the year, in the last week of Term 4. A class collection that starts a few weeks before then has time to close before the last week.

On World Teachers' Day a card or a note from your child is plenty. Save any gift for the end of the year, when it doubles as a thank you for the whole year. For card wording, see our teacher thank you card ideas.

What makes a good teacher gift

  • A specific, handwritten thank you. Name a moment from the year: the reading breakthrough, the way they settled a nervous kid, the excursion they ran in the rain.
  • Something consumable or useful rather than another ornament or mug. Hand cream gets used every day, and so does a book for the class library.
  • One class gift instead of many small ones. A single gift from the class is easier for the teacher to accept and to declare if the rules ask for it.
  • A thought for the people nobody buys for, like the teacher's aide and the office staff.
  • No cash. Every department policy in the table below rules out cash or cash vouchers, so a class collection should end in a gift or a store gift card.

Teacher gift ideas by budget

Prices are examples seen on Australian retailer sites in October 2026 and change often. For a class collection, check the state rules further down before you pick a gift over $50.

Under $20 (from one family)

  • Handwritten card or drawing: Free, and the part of any gift that lasts. Ask your child to say one thing they loved about the year in their own words.
  • A book for the class library: Pick an age-appropriate title and have your child sign the inside cover. The Very Hungry Caterpillar board book was about $10 at Target, Oct 2026.
  • Notebook and pen: A good journal is handy for planning next year.
  • Desk calendar for next year: Practical for a teacher's desk, and timed for the end of the year.
  • Tote bag: Teachers carry marking home every night. A cotton tote is useful and cheap.
  • Small pot plant: A hardy plant from your local nursery for the classroom windowsill.
  • Home baking for the staff room: A tin of biscuits for the whole staff room thanks everyone at once.
  • A letter to the principal: Free and often valued more than a gift. A short note to the principal about what the teacher did for your child is a thank you they can share with their school.

$20 to $50 (one family or a few together)

  • Reusable coffee cup: A travel mug with a lid, for the teacher on yard duty with a cold coffee.
  • Hand cream: Whiteboard markers and hand sanitiser are hard on hands. L'Occitane Almond Sublime Hand Cream 75ml was about $39 at David Jones, Oct 2026.
  • Premium hand balm: A step up for a teacher who has everything.
  • Diffuser or candle: Something for home rather than the classroom. An Orlo diffuser 200ml was about $49.99 at Adairs, Oct 2026.
  • Cafe or bookshop gift card: A store gift card from a local cafe or bookshop is easy to post in a card. Choose a store card, not a prepaid Visa or Mastercard.
  • A small experience voucher: Experience vouchers can start low and last a long time: Red Balloon vouchers start from $25 and are valid for five years (Oct 2026).

$50 to $150 (a class collection, check your state rules)

  • Store gift card from the class: The most common class gift. Pick a card for a bookshop or department store and put the total in the card, not the list of who paid.
  • Experience voucher from the class: Lets the teacher choose a treat for the holidays. Check the value against your state's threshold before you buy.
  • Massage or day spa: A real rest after Term 4. A voucher worth more than $50 is reportable in NSW, and above $100 it has to be declared in VIC and WA.
  • Class book of messages plus a voucher: Each child writes or draws one page, the class rep binds them, and a store gift card goes inside the back cover.
  • A gift for the classroom: Some teachers would rather have books or art supplies for next year's class. Ask quietly before you buy.
  • Split it with the aide: If the class raised more than you need, a second, smaller gift for the teacher's aide keeps each gift modest.

Over $150 (check the rules before you buy)

  • High tea for two: A generous class gift. In QLD it sits above the $150 that principals can pre-approve for end-of-year gifts, so ask the school first.
  • A bigger experience voucher: Only for a large class or a whole-cohort gift, and only after checking the rules below. In WA, a gift worth $500 or more is declined or kept by the school.

How to run a class collection

One shared collection keeps it simple for every family. Our QR code generator makes a code you can print on a note in each child's bag, and the group gift wishing well guide covers wording for the ask.

  1. Check the rules first. Look up your state in the table below and read the school newsletter. If anything is unclear, ask the class rep or the school office before you set a target.
  2. Set up one collection. Create a free registry for the class gift and add a wishing well. Then share one link in the class group chat or newsletter.
  3. Keep it optional. Suggest a small optional amount per family and say clearly that any amount is welcome, including nothing. Never share who gave what.
  4. Buy the gift. Once the total is known, the organiser buys the gift or a store gift card. Never hand over cash or a prepaid Visa or Mastercard card, and in WA not a bank transfer either. The department policies below rule these out.
  5. Add a card everyone signs. Pass a physical card or a class book of notes around at pickup. The message is the part teachers keep.
  6. Remember the helpers. If the total allows, put a little aside for the aide or the office staff, as a separate gift with its own card.

Teacher gift rules by state (government schools)

Each state education department sets what its own public school staff can accept. The table below sums up what each department's policy says, as checked in October 2026. It is a plain-English summary, not legal advice, and the school has the final say.

One rule matters most for class gifts: in NSW, VIC and WA a group gift counts at its total value, not each family's share.

  • SA, ACT, NT and TAS: we could not find a current department rule to quote, so check with your school before you collect.
  • Catholic and independent schools set their own rules, so check the newsletter or ask the school office.
  • In all four states in the table, a prepaid Visa or Mastercard style card is ruled out along with cash. A store gift card or a physical gift is the safe choice.

More for the end of the school year

Pair the gift with a few honest lines. Our teacher thank you card ideas has messages from parents and children, plus lines the whole class can sign, and the thank you card ideas guide covers sign-offs.

Make it a class gift

One gift from the whole class is easier for the teacher to accept than a pile of small ones, and it gives every family a way to take part with whatever they can spare.

  1. Create a free registry for the occasion.
  2. Add a wishing well.
  3. Share one link with everyone who wants to chip in.
  4. Buy the gift once you know the total.

Setting up a registry with a wishing well is free. Guests can chip in by bank transfer, in cash or in store with no EasyRegistry fee. Card and PayPal contributions are a Premium feature ($39 one time), and card funds are released when the registry closes.
