Thank-you cards

Thank you card ideas and what to write

The best thank you card says what you are thanking them for, adds one detail about what it meant, and looks ahead. Three short sentences in your own words beat a long verse. For money or a voucher, say what you will put it towards, never the amount.

Thank you card ideas beyond the words

A thank-you lands best when it feels made for one person. The card can be plain; the extra touch is what people keep.

  • A child's drawing, or a few lines in their own writing, for a teacher or coach.
  • One big card the whole class, team or office signs, handed over with a group gift.
  • A printed photo from the day: the party, the last game of the season, the classroom in the final week.
  • A short note tucked inside a return gift, so the thanks and the present arrive together.
  • A list of three small things they did that made a difference.

How to write a thank you card

Most thank-you cards need three sentences, not three paragraphs. This formula fills them.

  1. Name the thing. Start with exactly what you are thanking them for: the gift, the dinner, the help moving house, a year of teaching.
  2. Say what it meant. Add one specific detail: how you have used the gift, or what your child says about class.
  3. Look ahead. Finish with something forward-looking, like seeing them at training next season or owing them a dinner.
  4. Sign off to match. Choose a sign-off that sounds like the way you talk to them in person (see the table below).

Saying thanks for money or a voucher

Leave the amount out. Say what you will put it towards, or what you have already bought, so the giver can picture it.

If a group chipped in through a collection, one card to the organiser plus a message they can pass on to everyone is enough.

For money and vouchers

  • Your generous gift is going towards our new couch, and you are welcome to test it out any time.
  • That voucher turned into the runners I have wanted for months. Thank you so much.
  • We were blown away by everyone who chipped in. You helped make the trip happen.
  • To everyone who added to the collection: the new bike has arrived and has not stopped being ridden.

Thank you card wording by recipient

Short lines to copy and make your own by changing one detail. For teachers and coaches, the teacher thank you cards and coach thank you messages pages have more than sixty each, grouped by who is writing.

For a gift

  • The vase is already on the kitchen bench, full of flowers from the garden. Thank you.
  • I love the scarf. It has barely left my neck since you gave it to me.
  • Remembering my birthday with such a lovely gift made my week.

For hosting

  • Thanks for having us over on Saturday. The food was incredible and we stayed far too late.
  • Staying with you made the trip. The spare room, the coffee and the local tips were all perfect.
  • Your barbecue was the highlight of our summer. Next one is at our place.

For help or support

  • I could not have moved house without you. Thank you for the muscle and the pizza.
  • Those meals got us through the first weeks with the baby. You thought of everything.
  • Having you in my corner this year made a hard time easier.

For a colleague or your team

  • Covering for me while I was away was a huge help. I came back to a tidy inbox and no fires.
  • To the whole team: the card and the gift were lovely. I feel lucky to work with you.
  • Many thanks for the farewell lunch and the kind words. I will miss you all.

For a teacher, educator or coach

More on the teacher and coach pages.

  • Our son has grown so much in your class this year. Thank you for a wonderful year of learning.
  • The cuddles, the care and the endless patience at daycare: we will miss you.
  • Every early training session and every word of encouragement counted. Thanks, coach.

For someone you barely know

  • Your kind gift was a lovely surprise. Thank you.
  • It was so good of you to think of us. We really appreciated it.
  • Your help on the day was a real lifesaver.

A tool for wedding thank-you messages

Thank-yous after your own wedding are a bigger job, and many guests will have given cash. In the Easy Weddings 2025 Australian Wedding Industry Report, as reported by ACM, 90 per cent of couples had a wishing well for cash gifts at their reception.

Our free wedding thank-you message generator writes wedding thank-you messages to your guests: pick who you are thanking, what they gave and a tone, then edit the note and copy it into a card. For wishing well gifts, say what the money is going towards. Still setting the well up? See our wishing well wording guide.

When to send a thank you card

World Teachers' Day is held in late October in Australia (Friday 30 October in 2026, per AITSL), later than the international date of 5 October.

  • For a gift or a dinner: as soon as you can, while the moment is still fresh.
  • After a wedding or a new baby: later is fine and people understand, and a late card beats no card.
  • For a teacher: the last week of Term 4 before the summer holidays, or on World Teachers' Day.
  • For a coach: the last game of the season or presentation day.

Thank them with a group gift

When a whole class or team wants to say thanks, one bigger gift from everyone usually means more than a pile of small ones. Pair it with one card that everyone signs and hand them over together.

  1. Create a free registry for the occasion.
  2. Add a wishing well.
  3. Share one link with everyone who wants to chip in.
  4. Buy the gift once you know the total.

Setting up a registry with a wishing well is free. Guests can chip in by bank transfer, in cash or in store with no EasyRegistry fee. Card and PayPal contributions are a Premium feature ($39 one time), and card funds are released when the registry closes.

How a group gift wishing well works, and how much to ask each person for

Asked to chip in or sign the card?

One or two lines in your own words is plenty. The teacher and coach pages have ready-made lines if you are stuck.

Chipping in is optional. A small amount per person is plenty and any amount is welcome, as our group gift guide explains.
