Thank your coach

Thank you coach messages for the end of the season

Thank the coach for the time they gave and one thing they taught your child, and let the player sign too. Hand it over at the last game of the season or on presentation day, ideally in one card from the whole team.

What to write in a thank you card for a coach

Most junior coaches are parents or club volunteers giving up evenings and weekends. A card that notices the time, and names one thing your child got out of the season, is the thank-you they remember.

  1. Thank them for the time. Training nights, early game days, the group chat, packing up the bags. Say you noticed.
  2. Name one skill or moment. The first goal, learning to bowl straight, a pep talk after a loss. One detail beats a list.
  3. Say how your child feels now. Keen for next season, more confident, made new friends. That is what coaches hope for.
  4. Let the player add a line. A sentence in their own writing, or just their name and number, makes the card.

When to thank a coach

Junior seasons are set by each association, so there is no national calendar. Check your club's draw for the last round.

The two best moments are the last game, when the whole team is together, and the club's end of season presentation day, when coaches are usually thanked on stage. If a coach is stepping down mid-season, give the card at their last training.

Thank you messages for a coach

Copy a line and swap in a name or a detail from the season. Coaching a school team? A teacher-coach may also like a line from our teacher thank you cards.

From a parent

For the parent writing on behalf of the family.

  • Giving up your Saturday mornings for these kids is a big thing. Ethan has loved every minute of this season.
  • You taught our daughter to pass, defend and, most of all, enjoy the game.
  • We watched our son go from hiding at the back to calling for the ball. That change started at your training sessions.
  • Coaching a bunch of eight-year-olds takes patience we can only imagine. Thanks for showing up every week with a smile.
  • Your encouragement after every game, win or lose, meant a lot to our family.
  • Not every coach makes sure every kid gets a go. You did, and it showed.
  • The skills are great, but the confidence is what we are most grateful for.
  • Ruby has already asked if you are coaching next year. We hope so.

From the player

Short lines kids can write themselves.

  • I can kick with my left foot now too, thanks to you.
  • You made training fun even when it was freezing. Thanks, coach.
  • The drills with the cones were the best part. Thank you for a great season.
  • Thanks for believing in me when I missed shots. I will keep practising.
  • Best coach ever. See you next season.
  • Playing goalkeeper in the final was scary but I loved it. Thank you for picking me.
  • You always said to have fun first. I did.
  • I hit my first four because you helped me with my batting.

From the whole team

For one card the whole team signs.

  • From every player on the Under 10 Sharks: thank you for a season we will never forget.
  • We won some, we lost some, and we had fun in all of them.
  • One coach, fourteen players, a lot of oranges at half-time. Thank you from all of us.
  • This card is signed by every player you taught to be a good teammate.
  • A bunch of kids who barely knew each other at the first training are now a team, and that is down to you.
  • From the players and families of the Under 12 Tigers: thank you for your time, energy and endless patience.
  • Nobody could agree on just one thing to thank you for, so: thank you for all of it.
  • Season over, but the friendships stay. Thanks for bringing us together.

For a volunteer coach

When the coach gives their time for free.

  • You are not paid to do this, which makes it mean even more. Thank you for every early start.
  • Behind every training session were hours of planning, texts and setting up. We see it.
  • Volunteering as coach is a big commitment on top of work and family. Thanks for choosing to spend it with our kids.
  • First one at the ground and last one to pack up the bags, every single week.
  • Clubs only run because people like you put your hand up.
  • Your weekends were ours this season. We hope you get a few back over the break.
  • Giving your time to someone else's kids is a generous thing to do.
  • We do not say it enough: thank you for volunteering.

After a winning season

Premiers, finalists or a big improvement.

  • Premiers! None of it would have happened without your coaching.
  • What a season. Getting the team to the grand final and keeping it fun the whole way is a real skill.
  • The trophy is great, but watching the kids play as a team was the real win.
  • Undefeated and still humble. That says a lot about how you coach.
  • Congratulations on a brilliant season, and thank you for making every player feel part of it.
  • Bench to podium: thanks for believing in this team.
  • You took a young team and turned them into finalists. Well done.
  • We will be talking about that final for years.

After a tough season

When the scoreboard did not go your way.

  • The results did not go our way, but you kept it fun every single week.
  • Not one win, and the kids still could not wait for Saturdays. That is good coaching.
  • Teaching our kids how to lose well and try again is a lesson that will last.
  • A tough season shows who the good coaches are. You were one of them.
  • You never let a big loss get the kids down for long.
  • Improvement over results, every week. Thanks for coaching the way you did.
  • We may have finished last, but this was one of the best seasons our son has had.
  • Sticking with us through a hard year took heart. Here's to next season.

Short and funny

For a coach who likes a laugh.

  • Sorry for being so loud all season. Thanks for putting up with us.
  • Coach, you deserve a medal just for the car park at training.
  • Here's to more wins and fewer lost water bottles next year.
  • We promise to listen to the whistle next season. Probably.
  • You survived another season of under 9s. Legend.
  • Without you we would still be running the wrong way.
  • The only thing louder than our team was your whistle.
  • Ten out of ten for coaching, zero out of ten for half-time jokes.

For the team manager, umpires and helpers

The people who make game day happen.

  • To our team manager: the rosters, the reminders and the messages kept us all organised.
  • A huge thank-you to everyone who ran the canteen this season. The sausage sizzle was a highlight.
  • Cheers to the umpires who gave up their weekends so the kids could play.
  • Our assistant coach deserves a card of their own: thank you for the extra drills and the extra encouragement.
  • The scorers, timekeepers and line helpers make game day work. Thank you all.
  • Washing the jerseys every week is a thankless job, so here is a thank-you.
  • To the club volunteers who set up the ground before sunrise: we noticed, and we are grateful.
  • Nobody sees half the work a team manager does. We do now, and we are grateful.

Coach gift ideas

A card on its own is a perfectly good thank-you. If you want to add a gift, one present from the whole team almost always beats a pile of small ones, and families can chip in what suits them. Prices below are examples seen on Australian retailer sites in October 2026; retailers are named as examples only.

If the coach is a staff member at a government school, the education department's gift rules may apply, so check with the school first. For more occasions, see gift ideas by occasion.

Under $25 (from one family)

  • Card signed by the player: Free, and often the thing a coach keeps. Add the date and the team name so it means something in ten years.
  • Framed team photo: Print the team photo from the season and put it in a simple frame, with every player's name written underneath.
  • Notebook for plays and line-ups: A small journal for next season's plans (about $8 for a journal and pen at Target, Oct 2026).
  • Home baking for presentation day: A tin of biscuits or a slice, labelled from the team. Check for allergies first.
  • Coffee for the early starts: A few coffees on you at the canteen or the cafe near the ground, written into the card as a promise.

$25 to $75 (from one family or a few)

  • Travel mug for cold mornings: A small insulated mug for the sideline (about $30 at David Jones, Oct 2026).
  • Hand cream for winter sidelines: A good hand cream for cold wind and a lot of whistle-blowing.
  • Reusable cup: A keep cup with a lid for training nights.
  • Picnic rug for game day: Something to sit on between games, or at the beach in the off-season.
  • Experience voucher: Let the coach choose their own treat. Red Balloon vouchers start from $25 and are valid for five years (Oct 2026).

$75 or more (best as a team collection)

  • Wine and cheese tasting for two: An afternoon off with their partner or a friend. Check they drink first.
  • Massage: A massage and facial package after a season on their feet.
  • High tea for two: A proper sit-down treat for someone who spends weekends standing.
  • Dinner for two: A night out to make up for all the weekends.
  • Memory book plus a voucher: A page from every player, with a photo and a line each, bound together and handed over with a voucher from the team collection.
  • Signed ball or framed jersey: Every player signs a ball or a team jersey, framed with the season's photo. A keepsake that tends to end up on the wall.

How to run a team collection for the coach

One parent, often the team manager, usually runs it. Keep it light: the point is that everyone can join in, not that everyone pays the same.

  1. Agree with the team manager. Check nobody else is organising, and settle on a gift or a rough goal.
  2. Share one link. Create a free registry for the coach's gift, add a wishing well and drop one link in the team chat.
  3. Keep it optional. Suggest a small optional amount per family and make it clear any amount is welcome, including none.
  4. Pass the card around. Bring one card to the last two games so every player signs it.
  5. Buy and hand over. Buy the gift once the total is known and hand it over with the card at presentation day.

Make it a team gift

A gift from the whole team, handed over with one card every player has signed, says thanks from everyone at once. It also takes the pressure off families wondering what to buy.

  1. Create a free registry for the occasion.
  2. Add a wishing well.
  3. Share one link with everyone who wants to chip in.
  4. Buy the gift once you know the total.

Setting up a registry with a wishing well is free. Guests can chip in by bank transfer, in cash or in store with no EasyRegistry fee. Card and PayPal contributions are a Premium feature ($39 one time), and card funds are released when the registry closes.
